Lauryn Hill had previously been widely recognized as a key to the success of The Fugees but few were prepared for her stunning debut. Her record was a collection of overtly personal and political statements and it rocketed to the top of the album charts making her a superstar. Hill also produced much of the record, ranging from stun-gun hip-hop to smoother R&B with little trouble. One of the essential albums of the late 1990s and a musical epoch-maker.
