On their debut, the Jam offered a good balance between the forward looking, "destroy everything" aggression of punk with a certain reverence for 1960s beat and R&B. The Jam lacked the overt politics of the Clash and the raw rebelliousness of the Sex Pistols but they were less pretentious and more genuine. The band's energy is furious and Paul Weller's lyrics are about working class life without preaching while the anger in Weller's music is more focused and personal.
